Do you have a love for reptiles? Maybe lizards in particular? If so, you've likely been considering adding one to your family as a pet. If you're not real familiar with caring for a lizard, you may not know exactly what to look for in a healthy reptile pet. Because these majestic creatures can oftentimes be pricey and so can their care, you may opt to buy one at a discounted price or through a private seller. It's important to know what to look for when purchasing one, so you select a pet that will be thriving for years to come.

Buy from a Reputable Pet Store or Breeder

See an ad for reptiles for sale that has caught your attention? The next step is to call and set up an appointment for a visit. If it's a private breeder, you'll want to make sure they have a good track record of selling quality pets. Check their website for any positive feedback and do a quick Google search on their business. This can give you a little background if there is any negative responses from past customers, allowing you to decide if you want to move forward with a purchase. Always look for a seller or pet store that has a health guarantee or offers a refund if the pet gets sick or dies.

Look for Signs of Illness

When you arrive to visit your potential pet, check and make sure the existing surroundings are sufficient for a reptile or lizard. Lizards require an adequate amount of ultraviolet light to sustain proper skin health. Does the lizard look wet? Do their eyes appear healthy and are they moving around a lot? If you answered yes, they are likely very healthy. Lizards that slither around, have a foul odor or seem to be overly lethargic may have an underlying health condition. If that's the case, refrain from buying them.

Ask for Vet Records

A good breeder or pet store will provide some sort of health record for your new lizard. Even if the lizard has never been seen by a licensed vet, there should still be a record on file for any health concerns or treatment the pet has received in the past. It's important to take your new lizard to have a complete medical evaluation as soon as you purchase them. This will make it easier to find any potential health concerns and treat them right away. This ensures your lizard has a long, healthy life ahead.

Purchasing a lizard is a big investment, not only to maintain their daily health, but for ongoing care as well. Be sure you make a sound investment. The reward will be a new lizard buddy that you can share your time with and create lasting memories.
